Tutor Profile: I'm an Oxbridge Graduate, with experience tutoring all ages and abilities in a wide range of subjects.
I take a rigorous and structured approach to learning, using materials I have gained over several years taught by world experts.
And of course, I sprinkle a little imagination and creativity on the learning process, to ensure your child is really engaged.
I am flexible time-wise, and when it comes to delivering the approach to learning that you want for your child.
About me:
I graduated from the University of Cambridge in English Literature. Having written essays almost every day as part of my course, having being lectured by world experts across English literature, French literature, History and natural History (including evolutionary theory and the development of Biology), I am well qualified to lend my knowledge and expertise. Having had such an amazing education has lead me to unique points enquiry, learning and academic
experiences that I will be able to share with my pupils to give them the edge in their approach towards learning.
I have been tutoring students for four years form a broad range of backgrounds and a variety of English-speaking abilities. I have taught English literature, language,French, History, Mathematics and Art principally;
however, I could happily tutor all other subjects listed.
Please note: I also COACH STUDENTS THROUGH THEIR UNIVERSITY OR OXBRIDGE APPLICATIONS.
For the past three years I have worked as part of a teaching team at a summer school to get students of all nationalities and ages to improve levels in their English. Our curriculum was based on the Trinity Exam in Spoken English.
I also have lots of experience tutoring English students. I have provided a few case studies of my work:
William 16, was needing necessary maths grades to get into his chosen A-level college. Focused on GCSE curriculum but worked particularly on algebra and trigonometry. Went from a C grade to an A student.
Alex 14: Tutored art as he needed to get onto art scholarship for. Worked on artist profiles and case studies into tone and shading. Also focused on his essay writing skills when it came to critical analysis of the artists. Alex gained scholarship.
Sarah, 14: Sarah had rejected tutors so far. She was most passionate about literature and physics so I combined the two interests. We then focused on her problem areas of study and we followed the curriculum closely to iron out the problems she had at school. Sarah achieved full attendance record at school after my tutoring.
Jack, Chloe and Eddie: 17 and 18: interview help to get into Oxford and Cambridge. We focused on their subjects (English literature and politics) and we produced in depth case studies on their topic areas. Encouraged
lateral thinking and free thinking and got them to improve essay writing.
One to one tutorials are vital for the stimulation of ideas, discussion, debate and crucially, the nurturing of the student’s confidence in their own ideas. My approach towards tutoring will be to enhance these effects whilst encouraging independent and original thought. In the past, and subject dependent, this has best been achieved through the use of a wide range of materials and stimulus; and by discovering exactly what motivates the student and makes them tick in that subject area.
Importantly, this will be balanced with rigorous attention to the examination or course guidelines the student is working towards. Tutoring sessions and homework will always be based on the relevant syllabus for the course. Exam practice is fundamental for success, not least because the student is able to grow in confidence when it comes to tackling the examination requirements. Therefore, practice essay questions or exam papers will form the backbone of any course of lessons.
It goes without saying that the best way to ensure real progress is to maintain learning both during and outside lesson time. Therefore, homework tasks will be set where appropriate. Marking, and constructive feedback, will be done between lessons without additional charge.
Finally, if required, I am available for the journey from September to Summer exams. Constant and regular support is often vital to maintain progress and deliver consistent progress right up until exam day. Therefore, if assigned for a course of lessons, I adjust my tutoring to begin with key skills in that subject area, and end with revision and study skills nearer the exams. The latter skills are often taken for granted in students, when many need advice and direction on how best to learn, memorize or perform under exam pressure. I have always developed a good relationship with my pupils, and I aim to continue in this way so as to provide the support, encouragement, and academic help needed in order to achieve their best and for them to realize their potential.
