Updates from Tutors Directory

Do you teach workshops?

Tutors Directory is keen to hear from tutors who teach workshops and may be interested in contributing to our programme of online workshops for students and/or parents. You may have workshop ideas you think would work well online, have workshops you already teach that you would like to offer via the site or be interested in teaching on one of our own.

  • If you are interested in getting involved please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • To find out more about the type of workshops we are currently running click here

Note: You do not have to be a subscribed member of Tutors Directory but we do have a commitment to prioritise tutors currently listed in the Tutors Directory.

Are you available? Are you CRB checked?

Some tutors with profiles in Tutors Directory do not currently have their 'I am available' or 'I am CRB checked' boxes ticked. We understand that some tutors may be currently taking a teaching break or may only tutor adults and so have no need to be CRB checked.

However, if you are currently available and/or do teach children or vulnerable adults BUT are unsure as to whether your profile is accurate, please visit the section to check. It is important that your profile is up to date so that parents and students are getting accurate information about you and your services, and can contact you - otherwise it could mean missing out on a potential client. The best time to check your profile is now!

Please click here to log in or to request a password and/or user name reminder.

Are you fully onboard the Tutor Network?

You may be on the newsletter list but not registered for access to the rest of the Tutor Network. The Tutor Network is an essential connection facility for tutors in the UK to discuss and exchange ideas with each other as well as tutors all over the world. It also keeps you updated on trends, opportunities, resources and developments in the world of extra tuition - and it is free. Use the link above to register or request a password or user name reminder.

Summer break, or summer study?

Is a teacher’s work ever done? Now that the summer holidays are finally here, do you plan to hit the beach and forget about it all, or will you take some time to see how you can become an even better teacher for the new term?

We live in a rapidly changing world where legislative, social and economic developments directly affect the environment in which we work, and where technological advances provide many different ways of working. Continuing professional development (CPD) provides a way to keep abreast of these changes, broaden our skills and be more effective in our work.

No doubt you will already be familiar with CPD and the benefits of reflective practice to help improve an individual’s attributes, knowledge, understanding and skills.

Developing skills is essential so that teachers can continue to hone their craft and keep up to date with any changes in their field; it helps to stay abreast of the latest tools and any new trends in education.

Spare time during the summer months offer a great opportunity to expand your knowledge on everything from technology to foreign languages, time management to financial management. Many teachers use at least some of this time to take online courses and attend workshops or conferences.

Teachers who are employed will already have the support from their teaching establishments in encouraging CPD, but it is just as important for self-employed tutors to build on their own portfolio and keep up to date with changes in education and learning.

But should teachers spend the summer developing their skills, or relaxing, or both? What type of skills do tutors need to keep updated? How up to date is yours? Where might your portfolio be lacking? Join in, exchange views, comment or debate in the Learning Forum.

Five ways to attract learners to your profile

Do you have a Tutor Profile in the Tutors Directory? Yes? (If you don't, find out how to upgrade your membership to set one up here.)

Then you need to make sure your profile is working around the clock to promote your tutoring service to parents, students and anyone else interested in extra tuition. There is plenty you can do to attract learners and convert them into customers. Check out the five suggestions below.

1.    Add articles: Provide learners with inspiring information about your subject or your service. Your profile will be more attractive to learners if it is linked to information that may help them with their studies. You could be discussing changes in education, or providing advice on learning methods and resources. Learners may also keep coming back to your profile for the latest updates if you write regular articles or blogs.

2.    Use the forum: Start a debate! Whether you create a new topical debate or air your opinion on an existing post, voicing your ideas and opinions helps parents and learners find out more about you, your work and how you think.

3.    Link to your website: If you have an existing website make use of your profile to publicise this. On your website you will have more information on the type of service you run, recommended resources, articles and guides, all of which help to give potential customers more information about the type of tutoring service you offer.

4.    Add a picture or logo: Adding a picture to your profile will help bring it to life; visual aids make it more interesting to look at and it also gives you the opportunity to visually promote your work. As an example, if you provide a creative service you could post a picture of something you've made.

5.    Be a frequent visitor: Make sure you regularly visit your profile page; there is nothing worse than a learner clicking on your profile to see you haven’t been online for the last six months! It helps you to keep your profile active and updated.
