The number one weekly bulletin for tutors in the UK and abroad

Welcome to this week's Tutors Network. It has been an interesting and action packed week in the world of education, with news of a shortage of university places, the failure of the new Diploma, the planned scrapping of the 'i before e' rule, and A-level results being published - just for starters.

Before going any further, we'd like to extend our congratulations to all those tutors and learners whose long hours of work and study have paid off in such spectacular fashion... the proportion of pupils passing has soared from 78 per cent to almost 97 per cent. A big round of TD applause to you all!

Please keep those emails rolling in. We've had some fantastic responses to previous Tutor Network updates and are keen to continue to hear from tutors on the frontline of education. Send your news, tips and information to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Updates from Tutors Directory

Do you teach workshops?

Tutors Directory will soon be launching our sister site, the Workshop Directory. From next month the Workshop Directory will make it easier for workshop leaders to promote any type of workshop by putting you in front of potential participants. It is ideal for those who either run or want to start running workshops and those who like their learning short, practical and fun.

The site will operate an annual membership for those who wish to promote their workshops in any subject or field for children and/or adults, as well as guides and opportunities related to every aspect of running a workshop – from concept and preparation to delivery and review. It will also have a free directory listing section of names and addresses of workshop providers and suppliers. Find out more about the Workshop Directory here.

News Round Up

With A-level results having just been published and the scramble for university places starting we've entered that time of the year when things begin to warm up again in education and everyone begins preparing for the new term. Tutors Directory sent out our reporters to run the rule over the biggest stories and find out exactly what is happening in education circles this week. Spelling Bee

The Times newspaper recently ran a national spelling bee competition which has been a great success in getting children interested in spelling and developing a love of words. This week we take a look at how the spelling bee was won and investigate ways to encourage your learners to take up the challenge of developing their vocabulary.

Philosophy in the classroom

The Philosophy Shop is a social enterprise that aims to use the teaching of philosophy to encourage clearer thinking patterns in young children. The work that director Peter Worley does is fascinating and in our article this week, Tutors Directory looks at some of the 'mind games' and techniques that are used to develop lateral thinking skills in students.

Clearly the use of sound logic, reasoning and in-depth questioning skills help children to approach complex topics more easily and the work that the Philosophy Shop does is geared towards teaching these skills. Find out more about this exciting area of teaching by clicking here.
