Summer Learning Edition 14 August 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Keep Their Minds Agile This Summer

Children holding flowers

Where ever did we get the idea that summer should mean a total abandonment of learning? Imagine if for almost two months of every year we stopped using our legs, or arms, or fingers. Our muscles would deteriorate and seize up, and we would find movement difficult when the time came for us to start using them again.

Yet that is what happens to many of our children’s brains every summer. They stop using them in the same way and they seize up. Research consistently shows that children who do not engage in any type of mental activity during the summer tend to lose up to a third of what they have learnt during the academic year. Find out how to keep your child's mind mentally active by making the most of summer learning with our article, How Avoid Brain Seizure This Summer: Six Dos and Don'ts.

Some parents love them; others hate them, but whatever your feelings on the summer holidays, this time of the year is all about coming up with ideas to keep our children occupied and safe. Visit the Summer Learning section to find more new ideas and inspiration to ensure your child avoids ‘summer brain drain’: check out the different summer learning programmes available or, especially if you fancy learning something new too, check out the range of e-workshops currently running.

Say No to Summer Sloth!

The videos are aimed at helping families get children ‘up and about’ and doing their ’60 Active Minutes’... read more

Updates from Tutors Directory

Your child’s education: What every parent needs to know

This week we look at: How to identify and encourage a reluctant reader

Sometimes children can stuggle with reading, or simply show a lack of interest. Parental encouragement is a necessity, but in these cases a little creativity is often needed to develop kids' enthusiasm for reading. Guest writer and former primary school teacher Gill Budgell is here to lend a hand, with a number of tips and hints on how to help your children maximise their reading skills.

Tell us what you want to hear!

We are planning our autumn podcast interview programme and we would like to know what topics you would most like to learn or know more about. The programme will feature a range of audio and video interviews of personal coaches, authors, writers and other key personalities, which you will be able to listen to for free.

So whether it’s a learning issue for your child or a personal development interest for yourself, please take some time to fill out the Autumn Programmes Survey to tell us what you want to know, and we will do the rest.

The Workshop Directory

A new directory will be launched in September putting workshop leaders and workshop participants in touch with each other. The Workshop Directory will feature workshops in every subject and field for children and adults, as well as guides and opportunities related to every aspect of running a workshop – from concept and preparation to delivery and review. Find out more about the Workshop Directory here.
