They are said to be creative problem solvers, adaptable and to possess particular gifts in music and art due their dominant right-brain thinking processes – but do left-handers do things differently when it comes to running a business?
Well, we will soon be able to see if plans to set up a left-handers business club gets underway.
Keith Milsom, owner of the online resource centre Anything Lefthanded (ALH), and best-selling business author Robert Ashton (also left-handed) have come up with the idea of setting up a Left-handed Business Club to provide networking, support, training and resources to left-handers. It will also be a general sounding board for ideas and a place to get feedback and help from fellow lefties around the world.
Problem solving skillsKeith says: ‘We have found over the years that left-handers in business do think differently and tackle problems in different ways. Our own surveys and the results of various research projects do seem to indicate that there are more successful left-handed entrepreneurs and business people than the percentage of left-handers in the population would suggest.’
He suggests people like Henry Ford and Bill Gates may have succeeded as entrepreneurs in part because being left-handed encouraged them to challenge convention and think differently to come up with creative solutions to problems.
In fact Lauren Milsom, who runs ALH with husband Keith, says being left-handed does have some advantages and certainly should never be considered a disability.
‘We are used to having to adapt,’ she says. ‘It is second nature for left-handers to make things work and that is a skill useful throughout life.’
The idea of a Left-handers Business Club is really just an idea at the moment. Keith says it is being ‘floated’ to ‘get some feedback and see both what resources we have available already within our networks and what people would want from this if we can set it up’.
So they want to know how many other left-handers out there have business expertise and resources that they are willing to share with fellow lefties in business. Perhaps you have particular expertise in an area and are able to answer questions from others in a private forum?
