Online tutoring is a booming industry and as the internet has given us the ability to communicate over great distances at little cost so too has it opened up opportunities for learning.

It is now possible for individual tutors to have students in a variety of countries, opening up a vibrant dialogue between different cultures and expanding the benefits of teaching into even the most remote corners of the globe.

This exchange of information and expertise is facilitated by the ease with which we now communicate.

Software programs such as Skype, MSN Messenger, Yahoo chat and AOL Messenger allow real time face-to-face communication (Voice over Internet Protocol VoIP calls) between students and tutors and are conductive to focused teaching sessions.

In addition Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) have given more freedom to students by allowing them to access teaching materials outside of school hours and have helped create a sense of identity and community between students.

In our free guide to online learning, which is available to download from our website, we cover the most important things you need to know about the world of online tutoring, giving you information on everything from which type of equipment you’ll need to make VoIP calls to investigating VLE platforms such as Moodle and Frog.

Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, seeks to cut budget deficit by replacing ‘outdated’ textbooks with electronic reading devices.

Gov. Schwarzenegger wants to cut hundreds of millions of dollars in state spending each year. He believes that converting to online study will also help keep pupils more up-to-date.

From the beginning of next school year in August, maths and science students in California’s high schools will have access to online texts that have passed an academic standards review.

The governor says digital textbooks can be updated easily, so learning keeps pace with progress.

What does the future hold for educational textbooks, should e-books be the new way forward?
