Guidance on safety for tutors PDF Print E-mail

Tutors Directory is committed to making it easy for you to promote your tutoring services within a safe environment. The site is intended to make it easier for potential students to find you. The majority of the enquiries you receive will be from genuine parents and students looking for help with their studies or interest area, however some people are unfortunately hell-bent on abusing the system with bogus enquiries linked to fraudulent scams. The internet, and email in particular, serve as easy and inexpensive mediums for scammers.

First of all, when you register with Tutors Directory, none of your personal contact details are made public. Searchers can view your profile and the regional area in which you operate, but if they wish to make contact, they must do so through the Enquirers Contact Form. This requires them to include a certain amount of personal information as well as full contact details, a deterrent to scammers and time-wasters.

Furthermore, the form is configured with JavaScript testing to make it difficult for abusers using automated software to use – this is the type of software that enables scammers to send out huge numbers of spam emails.

In the past all enquiries were held in an admin vault until checked before sending off to tutors. We have recently improved the process to allow enquiries to go directly to the tutor as soon as it is sent, as this avoids any delays in putting tutors and students in contact. Tutors Directory does, however, keep a record of every enquiry sent in order to monitor the quality of these – and just in case you mislay or accidentally delete an enquirer’s details!

However, no system is foolproof. Despite our best efforts you may still receive the odd dishonest enquiry (and if you do, please let us know). Hackers work notoriously hard to ‘improve’ their skills in an effort to get past new technology and so we have prepared a guide (just follow the link below) to help tutors stay safe and protect themselves from scams.
